Heating Oil and Kerosene Oil Costs
The price of heating oil and kerosene oil often fluctuates throughout the year due to various factors. Understanding these can help you make informed decisions about when to purchase home heating oil at the best prices.
From roughly late autumn to early spring, demand for heating oil increases significantly as households rely more heavily on heating systems. This greater demand often leads to higher prices during the winter months.
Conversely, during the summer months when heating demand decreases, prices for heating oil tend to be lower. This summer lull presents an opportunity for homeowners to purchase oil at a more favourable rate in preparation for the upcoming colder season.
Seasonality isn’t the only thing that causes fluctuations in heating oil prices. Other factors can be harder to predict but it is still worth being aware of them.
Crude Oil Prices
The cost of crude oil, from which heating oil is refined, directly impacts heating oil prices. Fluctuations in global crude oil markets are influenced by production levels, geopolitical tensions and economic conditions.
Weather Conditions
Severe weather events, such as flooding or prolonged cold spells, can disrupt global supply chains. This can make distribution more difficult and increase demand for heating oil, which puts pressure on prices.
Government Policies and Regulations
Government policies, including taxation, subsidies and environmental regulations can influence the cost structure of heating oil production and distribution, impacting consumer prices.
The seasonality of heating oil prices, along with various market factors, affects the optimal timing for purchasing heating oil. Monitoring market trends, crude oil prices and weather forecasts can help you make informed decisions that keep your home heating costs lower.
The best time to buy heating oil is usually during the offseason, particularly in late spring or early summer when demand is low and prices are typically more competitive. Compared to waiting until the peak of winter sets in, purchasing your home’s heating oil during the offseason can often result in cost savings.

Heating oil or kerosene oil is the most cost-effective way to heat off-grid homes. Oil burns more efficiently than solid fuel systems, providing consistent and controllable heat output. This allows for better temperature regulation within your home compared to solid fuel systems, which may have fluctuations in heat output. In addition, oil produces fewer emissions and is often more convenient as it can be easily transported and stored in tanks.
