If you’re trying to pin down the red diesel price before placing an order, you’ve probably noticed that prices change frequently. That’s not suppliers being cagey. Red diesel price moves with the wholesale fuel market, sometimes more than once a day, so any number you see online is a snapshot rather than a promise.

What we can do is show you what’s actually driving the cost right now: the current fuel duty rate, VAT rules, and the market data behind today’s typical price. We’ll also cover how order size and location change what you pay, and how the price compares with white diesel. By the end, you’ll know roughly what to expect and how to get an accurate quote for your farm, site or home across Staffordshire, Cheshire, Shropshire and Derbyshire.

How Much Does Red Diesel Cost Per Litre Right Now?

UK red diesel averaged around 100.7 pence per litre in June 2026, based on AHDB market data, having eased back from a sharp spike to 112.4ppl in May. That’s still well above the 2025 average of 76.02ppl. Your own quote will depend on your order size, location and the day you buy.

That spike was driven largely by conflict involving Iran pushing crude oil prices up sharply through the spring, before easing back in June. It’s a good reminder that red diesel price tracks the wider crude oil market closely, and can move fast in either direction.

For context, AHDB’s figures (which strip out VAT and add back gas oil duty for a fair comparison) show red diesel averaged 76.02ppl across the whole of 2025, itself down from 80.84ppl in 2024. Zoom out further and 2022’s energy crisis pushed the annual average past 104ppl, so today’s price sits somewhere between that peak and the calmer years before it. (Source: AHDB Fuel Prices)

These are national averages, not what you’ll personally pay. The only way to get an exact figure is a live quote, but the numbers above should give you a fair sense of where the market sits before you ask.

Why Can’t Suppliers Just List a Fixed Price?

Red diesel is bought and sold on a wholesale market that moves throughout the day, much like the crude oil it’s refined from. A price posted on a website this morning could be wrong by the afternoon, which is why reputable suppliers quote live rather than publish a fixed rate.

This isn’t unique to red diesel. Forecourt petrol and diesel prices change constantly too, they’re just visible on a board because the fuel is already in the ground. Bulk fuel works differently. Every litre we deliver is bought ahead of the delivery at whatever the wholesale rate is that day, then priced to you with delivery, VAT and any relevant duty added on top.

The upshot is that a genuine live quote will always be more accurate than any figure in a guide like this one, ours included. What we can promise is that our quotes reflect the market on the day you ask, with no hidden markups.

What Affects the Price You Pay for Red Diesel?

Four things mainly decide what you’ll pay: the wholesale crude oil price, fuel duty and VAT, how much you order, and where you’re located. Each one moves independently, which is why two farms a few miles apart can see slightly different quotes on the same day.

Crude Oil and the Wholesale Market

Red diesel is refined from crude oil, so its price broadly follows the same trends as Brent crude and OPEC benchmark prices. Global events, from conflict in oil-producing regions to OPEC production decisions and exchange rate movements, all feed through to what you pay.

The 2026 spike is a good example. Rising tension involving Iran pushed OPEC benchmark prices up by roughly a fifth between May and June alone, and that fed almost directly into UK red diesel prices over the same period. There’s little any supplier can do about the end cost. It’s set by the global market long before the fuel reaches a UK terminal.

Fuel Duty and VAT

Red diesel carries a much lower rate of fuel duty than standard diesel, known as a rebate. From 15 June 2026, HMRC temporarily cut this rebate further, to 6.48 pence per litre, down from 11.14ppl. VAT is charged at 5% for most domestic and smaller commercial orders, rising to 20% above 2,300 litres for non-domestic use.

This rebate is the whole reason red diesel is cheaper than white diesel or DERV. Full diesel currently carries duty of 52.95ppl, more than eight times the red diesel rate. (Source: HMRC, Amended Fuel Duty Rates 2026 to 2027, GOV.UK) The rebate isn’t fixed at this level either. It’s due to step back up to 10.76ppl from January 2027, then 11.14ppl from March 2027, as the temporary cut unwinds. If you’re budgeting fuel costs into next year, it’s worth building that gradual rise in.

On VAT, most domestic users and smaller commercial orders pay the reduced 5% rate. If you’re ordering more than 2,300 litres for a use that doesn’t qualify for the reduced rate, the standard 20% applies instead, though VAT-registered businesses can usually reclaim this. Order Size and Delivery Location

Larger orders almost always work out cheaper per litre. A 205-litre barrel costs more per litre than filling a farm tank with 1,000 litres or more, simply because delivery costs are spread across more fuel. Your distance from the depot, and how easily our tankers can access your site, also factor into the price.

If you’re a regular red diesel user, planning ahead for a bulk delivery rather than repeated small top-ups is usually the single biggest lever you have over price. It helps to have suitable storage on site so you can take advantage of larger deliveries. Our team can advise on tank sizing and on-site storage if you’re weighing this up.

Season and Demand

Red diesel demand rises sharply around harvest and at points through the winter, and heavier demand can put short-term upward pressure on price. Ordering ahead of your busiest season, rather than when you’re already running low, gives you more room to plan around price movements and avoid paying a premium for an urgent delivery.

Red Diesel vs DERV: Which Is Cheaper?

Red diesel is significantly cheaper than DERV (white diesel), almost entirely because of the duty difference. With DERV’s duty at 52.95ppl against red diesel’s temporarily reduced 6.48ppl, the tax saving alone is around 46ppl, before you even factor in the underlying fuel cost.

The two fuels are chemically almost identical. Both are distilled from crude oil in much the same way. What sets the price apart comes down to tax treatment. Red diesel is dyed to mark it out for HMRC, and its use is restricted mostly to off-road agricultural, some industrial settings, and non-commercial heating purposes. If you use red diesel where it isn’t permitted, you’re liable for the full DERV duty rate plus penalties, so the price gap only applies where your use qualifies. For a full breakdown of what DERV is and where it’s used, see our guide to DERV.

How to Get the Best Red Diesel Price

The most reliable ways to keep your red diesel price down are ordering in bulk rather than little and often, planning deliveries ahead of your busiest season, and using a local supplier who doesn’t need to send a tanker a long distance.

A few practical steps that help:

  • Order in bulk where you have suitable storage for it
  • Plan ahead of harvest or winter rather than ordering in an emergency
  • Choose a supplier close to your farm or site
  • Ask about a regular delivery schedule if you use red diesel year-round

As a family-run, JET-approved supplier based in Cheadle, we deliver red diesel across Staffordshire, Cheshire, Shropshire and Derbyshire, including many of the more awkward rural sites our tanker fleet is specifically set up to reach. Whether you’re an agricultural customer or run a commercial site that still qualifies for red diesel, our team can talk you through your options.

Is the Red Diesel Price Going Up or Down in 2026?

The market price has eased back since May’s spike, but it remains sensitive to the same global pressures that caused it. On the tax side, the current 6.48ppl duty rebate is a temporary measure. Expect it to rise gradually from January 2027 as HMRC’s cut unwinds, back to its previous 11.14ppl level by March 2027.

In practical terms, that means the next few months are unlikely to bring dramatic tax-driven price changes, but it’s sensible to factor a modest rise into any fuel budget you’re planning for 2027.

Red Diesel Price: Quick Answers

How much does red diesel cost per litre?

There’s no fixed figure. As of June 2026, the UK market average was around 100.7ppl according to AHDB data, but your actual price depends on order size, location and the day you order. Get a live quote for an accurate figure.

Does buying in bulk reduce the price?

Yes. Larger orders spread delivery costs across more litres, so a 1,000-litre-plus delivery typically costs less per litre than a 205-litre barrel. Regular bulk orders are usually the most effective way to manage your red diesel costs.

What VAT applies to red diesel?

Most domestic customers and smaller commercial orders pay 5% VAT. Orders above 2,300 litres for non-domestic use are charged the standard 20% rate, though VAT-registered businesses can typically reclaim this.

Is red diesel always cheaper than white diesel?

Almost always, because of the duty rebate. Red diesel currently carries duty of 6.48ppl against DERV’s 52.95ppl. The saving only applies to eligible off-road, agricultural or non-commercial heating use, using red diesel illegally carries serious penalties.
