Typically, you can heat your home by using zones, but in my experience, unless you live in a modern or recently refurbished house, you probably control the heating by manually turning radiators on and off, and deciding when the central heating runs. A log burner is usually for creating a cosy atmosphere during quiet nights in, rather than being the main source of heat. After all, a wood burner isn’t just about heating—it’s about setting the mood and making your home feel more comfortable, rather than just saving money. If this report and the research had been carried out by a truly independent group without an agenda, they would have acknowledged that log burners aren’t simply a cheap energy option for those with access to affordable or free wood. Yet, the newspapers ran with headlines claiming log burners cost 50% more, which seems intended to slow the rise in their popularity, as sales of wood burners were up 40% in 2022.

According to England’s Chief Medical Officer, Chris Whitty, even modern “eco-design” wood burners emit 450 times more toxic air pollution than gas boilers.
